Cleft Lip and Palate Care at Smilesure Dental

At Smilesure Dental, we specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care of children born with cleft lip and cleft palate. Our experienced team understands the challenges that come with this condition—and we’re here to guide and support your family every step of the way.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are common birth conditions that occur when a baby’s lip or the roof of the mouth (palate) doesn’t form properly during early pregnancy. This results in a gap or opening that may affect the lip, the palate, or both.

These conditions can vary in severity but are treatable with the right care and a coordinated team approach.

• Cleft Lip: A separation in the upper lip, which can appear on one or both sides.
•Cleft Palate: An opening in the roof of the mouth that can extend from the front to the back of the palate.
•Cleft Lip and Palate: A combination of both conditions.

Every child’s cleft is unique, and we tailor our treatment plans to meet your child’s specific needs.
Clefts may occur due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some possible risk factors include:
•Family history of cleft conditions
•Certain medications during pregnancy
•Smoking, alcohol use, or poor nutrition during pregnancy
•Infections or health conditions during early pregnancy

While the exact cause isn’t always known, know that you are not alone—and there is nothing you did to cause this.

In many cases, a cleft lip is detected during a routine ultrasound around 20 weeks of pregnancy. Cleft palates are sometimes harder to detect before birth and are usually diagnosed during the newborn exam.

If you are expecting a child with a cleft, we encourage early consultation to begin planning for care after birth.

Children with cleft lip and/or palate may experience:
•Feeding difficulties – especially during infancy
•Speech and language delays
•Frequent ear infections or hearing issues
•Dental and orthodontic concerns
•Social and emotional challenges

Our multidisciplinary team is here to address all aspects of your child’s health—from infancy through adolescence.
